Protecting British steel matters and so does protecting the British businesses that rely on it.
I recently met with South Northamptonshire constituent Alex Bailey of Dynamic Metals, a specialist aerospace steel supplier. As a result of the Government’s rushed new steel tariffs, his business could face an extra £3.2 million in costs from 1st July despite the fact the specialist steel he imports simply cannot be made in the UK.
This is what happens when legislation is written without proper consultation with industry. The real-world impact of this is bankrupting British manufacturers, threatening jobs and damaging supply chains.
Alongside my colleagues in Parliament, I have urged Ministers to urgently revisit these measures and meet with businesses like Dynamic Metals before irreversible damage is done.
We need a steel strategy that genuinely supports British industry, not one that destroys parts of it.
