In recent days, I have been inundated with emails from constituents expressing their concerns regarding the Government's announcement of Mandatory Digital ID. The plan is a cynical gimmick. It is designed to distract from Labour's scandals, will cost billions and take years to implement. There are many crucial data security concerns but the most damning point of all: it simply will not work.
If the Government was serious about stopping illegal immigration, it would take real action. Instead, it is choosing to focus on Mandatory Digital ID despite there already being a requirement for businesses to check an individual's right to work in this country. If an unscrupulous business decides to evade the law and employ illegal immigrants now, how will the Mandatory Digital ID change a thing?
Given the strong response to this proposal by South Northamptonshire residents, I have set up a local petition to show the Government that "South Northamptonshire Says NO". I would encourage as many of you as possible to please sign it here: https://www.sarahbool.uk/oppose-mandatory-digital-ids-petition.
